I have installed Lotus Traveler onto my own server and am now using it from a Windows Mobile mobile phone (iMate Jamin). I have found that even though this phone is only on GPRS, the Lotus Traveler application is very reliable.
I also have a Blackberry and a BES server. I have not used my Blackberry in some time now as I preferred to use my Nokia phone. However, after good use, my Nokia decided that it didn't want to work for me anymore, so I was forced to look into some other options.
I had used my iMate in the past for a job I was doing whereby the client required about 80 iMate's. As it is about 2 years old (put hardly ever used), I am now using it as my main phone.
When I compare Lotus Traveler to my Blackberry, I would say, go for Lotus Traveler. It is able to do the primary features of what a Blackberry running with BES can do. I doesn't have the ability to set your "Out of Office", but who really cares!
Also, Lotus Traveler is a lot cheaper to run. I am not sure about other parts of the world, but in New Zealand, Vodafone charges about (NZD)$40.00 per month just to have the BES connectivity, as well as regular line costs etc. Also, BES requires you to have licences at the server end.
